The Sound of Silence

We are living in a world of constant noise. Internet, television, podcasts, social media, radio, phone or just the conversations we’re having daily. Do you feel like you are bombarded with chatter all day long in some form or other?

What happened yesterday can still be coming through in our heads – that little inner voice, we can allow ourselves to be overloaded with the words we spoke or heard the previous day.

Does the lack of silence in our lives have an impact on our mental fitness?

Rarely do we ever find times of pure uninterrupted silence. When we do have the opportunity for silence, we often try to fill it immediately. Do we think it’s good to occupy our minds with noise all the time? Everyone is different and we all have different temperaments, personalities, vocations, family lives but everyone needs times of regular silence and solitude.

What kind of impact is it having on our stress levels or emotion and mental well-being.

What are the benefits of real silence and stillness?

  • Improves our mental clarity
  • We hear what we don’t usually hear
  • Improves our self-awareness
  • We can take in the beauty around us
  • Boosts our creativity
  • Improves our listening skills and relationships

Simple ways to practice more silence –

  • Take 10 minutes out in the morning or at night
  • Switch off our headphones when taking a walk
  • Turn off the radio in the car
  • Consciously focus on our breath
  • Enjoy our meals without distractions

Research suggests that benefits of silence improve our coping skills in times of stress.

Is this why lovers don’t need any words? Love doesn’t need words.
